That's dedication!
Traveling can be tough on the diet, but I tried to be good. The snacks on the plane were mostly junk. I stuck to some healthy almonds and a bottle of water. Dinner was at an Irish pub. It wasn't my choice. I had what they claimed was one of their healthy options. Seafood with a light wine sauce over angel hair pasta. Of course, they never specified what the criteria were for the healthy options. I guess most people eating at a pub aren't really all that concerned with that.
I always have good intentions of going to the gym, when I travel. Usually I do, but I didn't this time. Maybe the couple of glasses of wine I had sapped my motivation. That's why I forced myself to get to the gym immediately after getting off the plane. Even before I had a chance to go home! Even before eating! I almost always eat before going to the gym. It really sucks to work out when you're hungry, I think. But, I've read that exercising before eating burns more fat, so I probably should do it but I'd probably pass out!
So lunch was ordered for us today, and it was chicken parmesan. It was actually home made, and looked really good. I just cut off the breading and took off the cheese, so it was basically just chicken. Thankfully, they had a nice big green salad, so I ate lots of that.
I am going to cook again. Really. I ate a Healthy Choice mediteranian pasta dish for dinner, which was really good. And for a nice healthy snack, spinach with garlic. Those bags of veggies that you can steam and eat make great snacks in the evening when you just want to eat something and you're tempted my high-fat snack.
Well, I'm getting to bed because, as always, I'm planning to get up and run in the morning. I probably won't get up in time, but that's the plan. Always the plan.

It ain't rocket science!
I really hate it when you read that a diet or product is "guaranteed" results of losing "up to" ten pounds, twenty pounds, etc. in a certain period of time. That's Bull Shit! First of all, we all lose weight differently. Secondly, up to can be anywhere from zero to ten, or twenty, so it's easy to make that guarantee. You could lose zero, and still be losing "up to" that amount.
I really love the one that's scientifically proven based on your age, sex, blood type, body type, sexual preference, etc. and when a "unique combination of foods" will cause weight loss, or the miracle pill where you can eat what you want and never have to exercise.
I was so overwhelmed when trying to pick a diet, I just changed my way of eating. Six pounds and two-weeks later and I'd say it's working. Face it, we all know when we're overeating and when we are eating something we shouldn't. We just have to make up our minds to change our evil ways!
I think it's also really important to get off your but and do something physical. I was listening to a guy on the radio last week who had lost more than 100 pounds. He said "if you want to lose weight you're wasting your time at the gym." Again, Bull Shit! You will enhance your weigh loss if you're burning those extra calories not to mention you're strengthening your heart, toning your body, increasing muscle mass, reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, increasing your mental sharpness, etc. etc. How can you say that's a waste of time? That's a cop out. Yes, you need to modify your diet to lose weight, unless you're training for a marathon and burning a crazy amount of calories. I'm not quite there yet. Maybe when I'm 80!
I'm so exhausted I kept it simple for dinner. A Healthy Choice dinner and a quick butternut squash soup as a side. Gotta get in those veggies!
Just throw all this in a pot, boil until squash is tender, puree and eat!
1 bag frozen butternut squash
1 can fat free chicken stock
about 1/2 Tbs. curry (more if you like it spicy)
1/4 tsp. ground cumin
salt/pepper to taste
1/4 cup fat free half and half (add this after pureeing, heat through, serve)
Oh, and bonus, it's fat free! You can really eat all you want.
I'm heading to Halifax for the night tomorrow, so eating healthy may be a challenge, but I'll try. Some restaurants are more willing than others to make modifications. Salads are always a good choice, as long as they don't have too many high-fat additions.
In spite of my complete exhaustion today, I did make my body pump class. It would have been so easy to skip. I always have to think about the end result and how good I will feel for the rest of the day. I did feel good, but could have taken a nap at any time.
That reminds me that when I went to the gym the other day, I saw some people wearing shorts who should not be wearing shorts! Maybe they have a distorted body image like I get when I look in my mirror at home. I wore shorts once, but then when I saw myself in the mirror at the gym, I grossed myself out! It's great to be so comfortable in your body, but Please! have some consideration for others! Maybe I'll consider shorts again after I've lost my 20 pounds. Only 14 more to go!

Fat suit
Oh, Lifetime. No better way to spend a rainy Sunday. I've accomplished absolutely nothing today. Those cherry cosmos last night sapped my motivation today. I keep forgetting that when I'm eating less, I have to drink less or I will pay dearly.
It has been a super healthy food day today. Started with a Weight Watchers egg and cheese sandwich. Lunch was vegetable and bean curd soup and steamed vegetable dumplings from the Chinese place. Both very light and healthy. Dinner was homemade pizza:
One whole wheat pita
roasted garlic
diced tomatoes
oregano
fat free cheese
Spread and mash the roasted garlic onto a pita, place 3 or 4 tablespoons of tomatoes on top, sprinkle with oregano, top with fat free cheese and bake until browned. It's really good not to mention good for you!
I also had a really delicious baked sweet potato for a snack mashed up and mixed with fat-free half and half and a little sweet potato seasoning made of coriander, cumin, cinnamon, and mint. Really spices up an ordinary sweet potato.
They rolled out the new classes at the gym. I attended the new Body Pump class Saturday morning. They mix it up every few months to keep it from getting stale. I could feel the chest presses today. Another reason to do nothing today! You're supposed to rest those muscles every once in a while anyway. I'll be back tomorrow, but I'll have to take it easy on the shoulders. I think I have a rotator- cuff issue going on. Probably from lifting a 45-ish-pound four year old in and out of the car.
I will say that he saved me from eating all kinds of goodies on the kitchen tour yesterday. I had to chase him around then carry him out before he upended a display. The kitchen tour is a fundraiser sponsored by the hospital auxiliary. Six homeowners open their homes for visitors to tour their fabulous kitchens. Some were really amazing. Some a little too country for me. Makes me want a new kitchen! Cooking at home is so much better for you.
Since I forgot to weigh myself at the gym during the week last week, I stepped on yesterday. Six pounds! And I trust that scale more than my own, so I'm pretty happy about that.
Well, back to the movie about the girl in the fat suit. I'll keep working to shed mine!

Grocery Store Rage and Bad Wait Service!
The strawberries are terrible right now! Why is it that just a week or so ago they were nice and fresh and reasonably priced? Is there a war going on somewhere that I don't know about? Have strawberry stocks tanked or something?
Has anyone heard of anyone going postal in a grocery store? Is there such thing as grocery store rage? You all know what I'm talking about. There are one million customers in line and four, yes there were four registers open. . . during lunch hour! So, this seemingly very nice woman who commented on my raspberries runs, yes runs to the newly-open lane. She was behind me! I only had three items! I bet she's never run in her life. Why is it that people who get in line last think THEY shouldn't have to wait? You know, it's the same ones who drive up the left lane when the sign clearly says it's closed. It's OK. I kept my cool. After all, I just lost five pounds. I think she found them.
I went out to dinner tonight. I kept it very healthy again. Salad bar, salmon, plain baked potato, and asparagus. The food was good. I just wish anyone at a local restaurant knew how to properly wait tables. Oh, she was friendly enough, but she failed to tell us the specials, (had to hear the other waitress tell the table next to us, after we had been served!) never brought water that we asked for, that we shouldn't have had to ask for, asked me to take my salad fork so she could take my plate. . . they should always bring you a new one--this is a major faux pas! She didn't ask if we wanted dessert, and asked for the credit card before she gave us the check and my son was still eating. It's not like it was busy. We went to one of those hotel restaurants where I knew it would be quite. I think I need to give a wait-staff etiquette class. Even in the so-called fine dining establishments, they do not know how to properly wait a table.
Oh, and I think the chef put butter on my asparagus even though I asked for it without. I had to wipe it off with the napkin. Can't you order what you want anymore? I'm so cooking this weekend. Need to work on some recipes.
Did I mention that I lost five pounds? My muffin top is slowly becoming a mini-muffin top. Well, gotta get to sleep so I can head to Body Pump in the morning!

Disgusting fat exhibit and dodging land mines in the park
I went to the gym and did two hours of classes! That's right. Uh huh! I was exhausted going in, so I'm ready to drop now. I'll keep this short tonight. I did a step-aerobics class and then Body Pump! I think I was on auto pilot. The instructor tonight was fun, so that kept me going! I was kid free tonight, so you'd think I'd be out having fun or something, but no I'm a gym geek! Jillian would be proud!
Maybe, if I get to bed at a reasonable hour tonight, I can get up and go for a run in the morning. I refused to turn on the television tonight so that I didn't get sucked into any reality TV. Just say NO to the reality TV!
The only problem with going for a run in the neighborhood park, is that I usually have to dodge land mines! You know, doggie do do. People are so rude! If you can't handle the responsibility of having a dog, don't have one! I do not want to pick up poop in the park and put it in a little baggie, so I do not have a dog. I yelled at someone once because their dog was pooping in the park. I wasn't their dog! Oopsie! So, I asked the next person if it was their dog and it was so I said, "your dog is pooping!" The person said, "I already picked it up twice." I DON'T CARE! It's your dog! Pick it up every time. The city even provides bags at the park, so there's really no excuse. C'mon. I don't even want to let me son play in the park because he'll probably get dog poop on him. I have come home in the past from the park with dog poop on my sneakers.
Tomorrow I have to make a dessert for a charity event. I'm keeping it simple and doing chocolate-dipped strawberries. They're actually fairly healthy too, as long as you use dark chocolate and don't eat too many. Of course, since I'm not eating them I'm going to dip some in coconut, some in mini chocolate chips, and some in chopped nuts. They'll look really pretty that way. Julia would be proud!

Water, water, everywhere!
Drink 6- 8 glasses of water a day. So, what happens when you forget? You drink it all just before bed. That means very little sleep. I get so busy every day and I become so parched and need to drink water, so I end up guzzling it just before bed. I end up getting up 3 or 4 times a night. I think they make commercials about this. I don't really like water anyway. Can't wine still count as fruit and wine? I know, I keep pushing that one!
They say nuts are so good for you. I love nuts, especially macadamia nuts. The problem is, I can't stop after a few. I want to eat the whole jar. They call my name from the cupboard. Susan. . . . we're here. . . come eat us. . . OK, I can't resist. My solution is to buy them in bulk at the grocery store. At 18.99 per pound, it's better for you body and wallet to buy them in small amounts. I get a handful at a time. That way they are only 2 or 3 bucks and I can eat them all!
Two days in a row missing the gym. Busy work day, so tomorrow it's two hours at the gym after work. I mean it!
Bad body day clothing wise! You know when you dress for work and don't feel good in your clothes it's going to be a bad day. I left, bought new pants, shoes and even a bra. I was still having a bad body day. It's not the clothes that make you look fat, it's the fat that makes you look fat!
That reminds me. . . ever run a race with hard-core runners? I made the mistake of running behind some hard-core runners and one threw her hat . . . I thought I'd be nice and pick it up. She yelled at me! I guess that's what hard-core runners do. I learned my lesson before this year's Komen race. Anything that hits the road stays there!
OK, Cougar Town is on. We'll go there tomorrow!

http://www.chicagotribune.com/health/chi-talk-tongue-patchsep22,0,6111154.column
Tough decision tonight Dancing with the Stars or Biggest Loser. I know there was a food competition show on, but I couldn't even go there. I'm really not a reality show junkie. Really!
I stepped on the scale today, and acording to my home scale, I've lost about 4 pounds. I don't like to trust that scale, so I'll also weigh myself at the gym.
A couple of very busy days, so getting to the gym will be a challenge, but I will meet my goal of at least five hours of exercise this week. I won't have much time to cook, but I'm happy to have discovered the new Healthy Choice dinners. The Asian potstickers are really good! It's time for some new low-fat frozen dinners. I love the Lean Cuisine, but after a while you need a change. I remember in High School thinking I was always going to just eat those low-fat frozen dinners. Hmmm. Must have been before I discovered cooking.
Yes, I love to eat and it's so easy to skip the gym, but I have always exercised because I've seen first hand what can happen when you do not pay attention to diet and exercise. My dad was an avid fisherman, but you would never see him pumping iron or doing any cardio. He always ate whatever he wanted. Even when he was diagnosed with type II diabetes, he still ate whatever he wanted. He had high blood pressure for years. He died at age 63. He had suffered a stroke about four or five years earlier and not being able to do what he wanted I think eventually killed him.
When I hear people say "I'm going to eat what I want and enjoy life," I cringe because that's great if you die when you have that stroke or heart attack, but if you don't, you're not enjoying life, are you? And then someone has to take care of you. Those small sacrifices we make every day when we don't go to the drive through or when we hit the gym when we'd rather do something else all adds up to a better quality of life! It only hurts for about an hour. You feel the benefits for at least 24 hours! And the cumulative benefits for years!
When I see people in the grocery store driving those carts because they are too fat to walk, it doesn't make me sad, it makes me angry! They are disabled because of the decisions they made. I have a four-year-old son who is disabled not because of any choices he or I made and we can't do anything about it. He was born that way. Why would someone knowingly cause their own disabililty? You know what, my son will never drive those carts in the grocery store and he will never use his disability as a crutch. This country needs to get off it's fat ass!
Ok, I usually try to keep it light, so here's a couple weight-loss tips:
Want to lose ten pounds of ugly fat? Cut off your head.
Want to lose nearly 400 pounds of ugly fat like I did? Get divorced. Twice!

Dance (and laugh) your ass off!
I love to dance. Whenever I go to parties, I always get into the dancing. I just love it. I took jazz dancing lessons for eight years, disco dancing in the 70's, and even ballroom dancing in the 90's. I wish people were more willing to cut loose on the dancefloor! People think I'm drunk because I'm not afraid to cut loose. I just think people take their "fun" way to seriously. Really, everywhere you go, people are so afraid of making a fool of themselves, they forget to have fun. I remember a woman telling me and my sisters one time we were "making complete fools of ourselves." We just laughed at her.
Not only is dancing great exercise, it makes you laugh, which is really good for you too. I got the best workout ever at my sister's party this summer. I danced non-stop and even did a bunch of yoga moves. We all love to dance when we get together, and no we're not drunk!
I do have to say Tom Delay shakin' his but is not a pretty sight, but kudos to him for doing it. Eww old man but shakin' to Wild Thing! Very funny to watch though.
I got some pictures from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure race yesterday. Boy, do I look like a flabalanche! Here's a tip, stand on the end in the photo, that way you can be cropped out rather easily. Worked today. Just reminds me that I need to step it up in the diet/exercise department.
It was a busy Monday, so I didn't have time to cook, but I kept it healthy with a breakfast of a Weight Watcher's breakfast sandwich, Healthy Choice Beef Merlot, and Healthy Choice Pumpkin Squash Ravioli. All very yummy and healthy.
Went to Body Pump today. Scott, the instructor was out sick. How could he do that to us! It was so disappointing! I'll have to give him crap Wednesday. Anyway, it was still a good class. It's good to mix it up with instructors. They do different things so you work different muscles.
I need new sneakers. My toe hurt after the race yesterday. I actually set out for another run last evening, but my toe was so sore, I had to turn around. I wish I knew the best sneaker for running and also other fitness classes. If your joints can take it, it's a really good work out to tone you up really fast in the lower half, which is what I need. . . to get rid of the thunder thighs and the J-Lo booty. Ok, my tummy bothers me more than the junk in the trunk, though.
Sunday, September 20, 2009
The 1-mile water stop was a godsend! I quickly snatched up a cup of water, took a quick drink, and dumped the rest down my shirt. Then I remembered I was wearing a white shirt. Thank goodness I had strategically pinned my race bib over my chest. And I thought those people were just cheering me on as I ran the race!
My run was powered by my doppio espresso and a banana chocolate Vivano from Starbucks. The Vivano is pretty good for you, I guess, if you're having it for a meal. It has 270 calories and 5 grams of fat. It contains 1 whole banana, 2 percent milk and protein powder. It also has 6 grams of fiber and 20 percent of your daily allowance of calcium.
Beware, however, of the non-fat pumpkin spice latte. I've ordered them twice and they came with whipped cream, which adds 7 grams of fat. I ordered one today and the girl informed us that if you order the non-fat version, they automatically leave the whipped cream out anyway. If that's the case, I probably got the full-fat version! I really hope that's not the case, as that has 410 calories and 17 grams of fat! Starbucks is sabotaging my diet! Here's a tip, if your non-fat pumpkin spice latte has whipped cream, send it back! It's so not worth it! I guess I'll have to stick to coffee from now on.

Eat Naked!
Some other tips that I think work pretty well too.
- Biore strips: Put them on your face, especially your chin and nose. You can't chew with them on, or they will come off. So not only are you keeping yourself from eating, you're also getting all that junk out of your pores.
- White strips: Put them on in the evening when you're tempted to snack. You'll have fabulous white teeth and you won't be nibbling.
- Hang out with your skinny, beautiful friends. Just being with them will make you eat less.
- Read fitness magazines: They'll motivate you and you'll want to look like the models.
- Watch Biggest Loser: Even if you can't stand my body idol Jillian Michaels, you will be totally grossed out by the woman who weighs 476 pounds!
Going out for a run shortly. Gotta be ready for the 5K I'm running tomorrow. I know it's not that far, but it's up hill! I hate that. I don't mind running, but for some reason participating in a race is different. I can run 5K or more any day of the week. I think it's because I know I can stop any time, but with about 4,000 other people you don't want to stop. It definitely takes you out of your comfort zone. We all need that at times though to keep us motivated.
I'm heading over to a friend's for a girls' night, but I've gotta keep it healthy, especially since I'm running the race tomorrow. I wanted a snack that I wouldn't feel guilty about. After scouring my recipe books for something healthy that I had ingredients for, I gave up and created my own:
Roasted Eggplant and Garlic Spread with Curry
2 small eggplant about 10 cloves of garlic 1 red onion cooking spray, salt, pepper 1 Tbs. curry powder (more if you like it spicy!)
Soak eggplant in salt water to reduce bitterness. Slice Eggplant and cut onion into wedges. Spread on pan and shake salt, pepper, and curry all over. Put garlic in pan with skin still on. Roast at 400 for about 45 minutes, or until everything is tender. Cover with foil so the vegetables don't dry out. Remove garlic from skin. Place everything in blender or food processor. Add 1 Tbs. olive oil and 2-3 Tbs. of water and puree. It's OK if mixture is still a little chunky. Chill and serve with baked pita chips.
It's really guilt free and curry powder contains turmeric, which is supposed to help prevent Alzheimer's and some types of cancer. And it's colorful!
They say (you know those people who say things) that you should eat seven different colored foods a day. And no, M&Ms do not count. You can do this easily by making a colorful salad at the salad bar with spinach, tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, yellow peppers, chick peas, and maybe even some berries!
They also say you should only shop the outside aisles of the grocery store. That's where all the fresh food items are. Anything packaged is less healthy because it contains lots of preservatives or loses nutrients from the canning or dehydration process.
Fresh foods are expensive, so you have to be prepared to commit. Think about it though, it's an investment in your body! I thought I'd save a ton of money by cutting back on wine, but I've more than made up for it with all the fresh fruits, veggies, and seafood I've purchased. I feel really healthy though. It's worth it. And in the long run, it saves money due to the health benefits. (I still think wine counts as fruit, though!)
Well maybe tonight it will. Cheers!

Baby Got Back (Fat!)
People try to wear those high-waisted girdle things, but all they do is push the fat up higher. And you can always tell when women are wearing them, because they have no crack! So your back fat is under your arm pits and you have no crack. And that look is better how? Real women have curves! Don't waste your money on those body briefer things.
Unplanned workouts are awesome. I was feeling very sleepy and had a headache going on, and decided at the last minute to go to Body Pump with my friend Kristi. We did it without thinking about it too much--we only had ten minutes till class started! It would have been so easy to skip it. That's the problem. If you think about the workout too much, you'll talk yourself out of it. You just have to say I'm going to do it with no buts, just do it. Five minutes in I was saying "why am I doing this," but I also said "I'll know why in another 55 minutes." It was true. I felt awesome the rest of the day! My headache was gone. Working out almost always gets rid of my headache and I don't have to take a bunch of ibuprofen.
The egg white quiche I made for breakfast was good. See recipe in yesterday's blog. I'd recommend sauteing the scallops, mushrooms, and leeks in a little light margarine and a splash of vermouth first to remove some of the liquid and kick up the flavor. Otherwise, it was pretty good for a light dish. I prefer something like eggs for breakfast, and I read that people who eat eggs at breakfast tend to lose more weight because it satisfies better than a breakfast of just carbs with no protein.
Recently I began eating beef again after about ten years. I don't know why, but I was craving it. I wanted fillet Mignon like every night! It didn't take long for me to gain about 7 or 8 pounds. I couldn't believe it! That was really the reason I cut it out to begin with. With so much heart disease and high blood pressure in my family, I figured cutting out red meat would be a good choice. I just heard this week that eating beef, cheese, and cream triggers something in your brain that makes you crave it for up to three days. I guess that explains why I couldn't stop eating beef once I started. Best to just stay away I guess. I am working on a healthy version of Julia Child's Boeuf Bourguignon. I think I'll call mine "Spoof Bourguignon." Look for that recipe soon.
Once a month it's cake at the office to celebrate birthdays. I was tempted, but I refrained. It's kind of like that episode of Seinfeld when Elaine protested the cake in the office. I'd do that, but there will be a day when I need the cake! I can usually bypass the sweets anyway. Give me cheese, butter, and cream baby!
Dinner was a healthy salad of baby spinach, broccoli, chick peas, green peas, shredded carrots and onions. Very colorful. I also had a dish adapted from my Weight Watchers cookbook--my revised version of their Teriyaki Salmon.
Steel head Trout with mushrooms and green onions
1 pound Steel head Trout (it's a lot like Salmon but a little less fishy and usually a little less expensive)
4 green onions, chopped
8 oz. sliced mushrooms
1/4 cup dry sherry
2 Tbs. brown sugar
2 Tbs. soy sauce
Saute the fish, green onions, and mushrooms in a pan sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Add the other ingredients and cook on med-high until fish is tender. Remove the fish and cook the onions and mushrooms in the liquid until it's reduced, 10-15 minutes. Pour the sauce with mushrooms and onions over the fish and serve.
It was pretty good. Till tomorrow. . .Eat well!

Old lady butt!
My butt is feeling the lunges and squats from yesterday when I was "put on the spot" by Scott, our instructor to add more weight. It killed at the time, but I'm glad I did it. I could definitely feel it today, but I wasn't as sore as I thought. I still went running today, because I'm doing the 5K in three days, and I really don't want to be too sore. It's way too easy to become complacent when no one is driving you. The gym is a good thing, even when you don't feel like it. I always feel so amazing after.
I also enjoyed a nice long walk as part of the United Way campaign kick-off. What a beautiful day for that event. One of the speakers talked about the health benefits of dark chocolate, red wine, and volunteering! OK, I should be pretty healthy because I do all of the above. Especially the last two.
Tomorrow is pot-luck breakfast at work. I know there will be lots of unhealthy stuff like donuts and muffins, so I'm making a very healthy fritatta. . .
Scallop, Leek, and Mushroom Fritatta
1 leek chopped (light part only)
4 oz. sliced fresh mushrooms
1 pound bay scallops
3 slices reduced fat Swiss cheese
1/2 cup fat free cheddar
1 cup egg white
1/2 cup fat free half and half
salt and pepper
Place all items in a pie pan sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Layer them in the order listed, then pour mixture of egg white, half and half and salt and pepper over the top. Bake at 400 for about a half hour, or until egg is cooked through.
I haven't tasted it yet because it's for tomorrow, but it sure smells good! I'll just heat it up in the morning at 350 for 10-15 minutes and it's good to go. I'll give you the taste test results tomorrow.
So, I guess three pounds is pretty good. I was listening to Cosmo Radio yesterday. ( I loves me some Cosmo Radio!) They were pointing out that even one pounds is the equivalent of four sticks of butter. . . on your thighs, butt, etc. So, I've lost 12 sticks of butter! When you put it that way, seems like a lot!
Think of all the butter Julia Child consumed in her lifetime! I wonder if Jillian Michaels eats butter?

Why do you lie to me?
OK, I thought Jillian Michaels was mean, but after today's body pump class, I'm not so sure. The instructor, Scott, forced me to increase my weight on lunges. OK, I needed it. It really sucked at the time, but I can tell it's going to make a difference. I think we all need someone to kick us in the butt! Usually my friend Kristi and I challenge each other, but she couldn't make it today. It was kind of fun, actually. There are just days when you wouldn't kick it up otherwise. I'll say to her, "OK, you can stay where you are, if you can't handle it."
Not only did I feel amazing after class today, but it was cool when someone came up and said "good job" after. Of course, now I'm gonna have to kick it up more and more. Oh well, BRING IT ON!
I can't believe, though, that I forgot to weigh myself. It's the one-week mark, and I was so focused on the workout and getting back to the office for a meeting, that I completely forgot that it was weigh-in day. Well, my home scale says I've lost three pounds! Yeah me.
Went out to celebrate, but kept it very healthy: grilled salmon, plain baked potato, carrots with no butter, half a roll. I did have two glasses of red wine. Hey, you've gotta splurge a little.
It's running tomorrow. I've got a 5K to run Sunday. It still amazes me that those people on Biggest Loser can't run one mile. I cannot imagine getting that out of shape. Even when I eat poorly, I keep exercising. It keeps me sane!
Well, I've gotta go. Can't wait to feel my buns of steel!
Tuesday, September 15, 2009
What a Bi#$*@#)!
Had to catch the first episode of the Biggest Loser. Ewww! man boobs! I can't believe people can lose 28 pounds in one week! I just want to lose 20.
Got the new issue of Food and Wine magazine. That doesn't help, but I'm not buying any bad food.
In fact, I had like 4 super foods for dinner: salmon, sweet potato, garlic, and leeks. Tomatoes and avacado are pretty healthy too.
It was all very yummy. Salmon with jerk seasoning sauteed with a little cooking spray and a salsa of tomato, avacado, and garlic; mashed sweet potato with leeks, fat free cheddar, a little fat free half and half, salt and pepper, and a little light butter.
One thing that makes a huge difference is seasoning. When I went to culinary school, they really emphasized putting salt and pepper on everything. Fresh herbs make a huge difference, and they are really healthy. If your food doesn't taste good, you're not going to stick to a diet for any length of time. It really is amazing how much a little salt and pepper can really bring out the flavor of the food. If you have high blood pressure, opt for the low-sodium seasoning, which will still make a big difference.
I read that Heidi Klum eats raw garlic every day. Hard to believe she's about to have her forth child! I guess when you look like her, you can get past the taste. I know it's really healthy, has anti-aging components, and can even give you energy, so I'm going to try it.
The bottom line is that if you put garbage in, you'll get garbage out. It may be fat, bad skin, brittle nails, dry hair. . . It's no coincidence that the really beautiful people treat their bodies like a temple.
I refuse to follow a diet though, so I'm just going to focus on eating really healthy foods and working out a lot! Just get on the treadmill behind a really hot guy (or girl) whatever works for you and chase them. Hey, you've gotta have some motivation!
And one more thing. . . why is it either super low rise pants or mom jeans? I refuse to wear those mom jeans, so I'll go for the low rise, but then you have to wear the low-rise undies and my muffin top keeps popping out over them. Help! Jillian, come yell at me!
Weigh in tomorrow. Yikes! And body pump.

on a mission
I hate reading magazines these days. Every other page is an ad for wrinkle cream or diet supplements--just say no! It's sad how they pray on those desperate to loose weight! It makes me sad to think how many people spend so much money on these things. My sister told me a story once about a doctor saying to a friend of hers, "if there was a pill that would make you thin, do you think I'd be fat!" Good point. You just don't know what's in there, so don't go there!
If it weren't for the oozing fat thing, I'd consider liposuction. My theory is that people put all kinds of money into their homes, cars, etc. why not their bodies. After all, it's the only thing you take with you everywhere you go. You even take it with you when you go. Do you really want to look bad when people are hovering over you in your casket? It is the last time you have to make a good impression!
OK, so in my attempts to look good, I made it to body pump class today. I really owe my guns to Scott, the instructor. He really motivates, makes it fun. I wish all instructors realized the importance of a personality. Come to think of it, I wish all people did. So, how late in the season can you get away with sleeveless shirts anyway? I mean, my arms and shoulders are probably my best feature. Someday, I hope to have arms like my arm idol Angela Basset. Yup, Jillian Michaels is my body icon, Julia Child my food icon, and Angela Basset is my arm icon.
Guess I've gotta work on the abs a little more now. I owe my abs of fromage to Julia!
A couple of quick, healthy recipes to try (what I had for dinner)
Whole wheat spaghetti with sauteed mushrooms, onions, garlic, 1 can finely diced tomatoes, fresh sage and rosemary, splash of wine.
Dessert: light bananas foster (adapted from my Weight Watchers cookbook-adapted on account of me not having all the ingredients and not wanting to spend the time preparing it!)
1 Tbs. light margarine (melted in pan)
2 bananas sliced lengthwise
cinnamon
1 Tbs. walnuts
1/8 tsp vanilla extract
Cook until bananas are warm. Serve immediately. Serves 2. May be served with fat-free ice cream or light whipped cream.
Bon Appetite! Happy Monday.

Cardinal sin!
I still feel like I'm sporting a small floatation device. . . with a very slow leak. Yeah, it's kind of like a small inner tube that I've been wearing for quite some time under my clothes. I'm ready to jump ship at any moment.
I'm getting ready to run the Susan G. Komen for the Cure 5K in a week. I've gotta get the lead out so it doesn't hurt too much. Got a couple of runs in this weekend. The 5K is usually not too bad, except the route is up hill for the first part.
The "healthy" blueberry martinis Friday slowed me down a little on Saturday.
Don't forget, go very easy! (ok, that advice was for me more than anyone!)
When you're eating lite, it hits you a little harder. I think it's best to skip them all together, but you do need to splurge once in a while! (MODERATION Susan!)
Julia could handle all her wine, but she was usually eating cheese, butter and cream. How did she live to long? I need to go to France to learn the secret. Eat and drink what you want, never gain weight, live to a ripe old age! Hmmm.
Once again, enjoyed some really yummy AND healthy food this weekend.
Last night, I made a nice seafood curry. Very simple, just add the following in a pot and simmer until veggies are tender. You can serve with Jasmine rice or whole grain rice.
3-4 cloves garlic
1 large onion
1 Tbs. curry (add more to taste)
1 Cinnamon stick
1/8 tsp. ground cloves or two whole cloves
1/8 tsp. grated ginger
Crushed red pepper, if you like it hot
32 oz. can fat free chicken stock
2 15 oz. cans light coconut mile
2 pounds fresh greenbeans and carrots
1 pound peas
8 oz. mushrooms
1 pound red potatoes, cut in large chunks
2 pounds scallops
1 pound large shrimp
salt and pepper to taste
Enjoy! See ya tomorrow!

EVERYTHING! (in moderation)
I do have to say that when I focus on eating healthy, it's really, really good! I had friends over and we had blueberry, vanilla martinis. Here's how to make them:
1 cup frozen blueberries
3/4 cup vanilla vodka
3/4 cup water
1 packet sugar substitute
Funny, that's not so unlike my breakfast of a blueberry banana smoothie:
1 cup frozen blueberries
1 banana
1 cup skim milk
1 packet sugar substitute
We also had an amazing sweet potato soup:
1 20 oz. can sweet potatoes
1 15 oz. can light coconut milk
1 32 oz. can fat free chicken stock
1 Tablespoon curry
1 tsp. chili pepper
salt/pepper
Bring to boil and puree.
And sauteed shrimp and scallops in 1 tsp olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and fresh chives and rosemary.
So, you really can entertain and eat/drink healthy!
I guess the alcohol isn't really all that good for you, but at least the blueberries are and we're not adding all that sugar, etc. in the mixers.
I think the weekends and entertaining are the hardest part about trying to loose weight. Getting in the fruit and water is tough too. I mean common', there's water in wine, right? And, doesn't wine count as fruit? So, eight glasses of wine a day is actually good for you, right?
Tomorrow will be a challenge. Going to Wing Wah Restaurant. It' hard to be good there. I'll have to stick to steamed veggies and shrimp cocktail. We all need to stick together on the weekends. WWJD (What would Jillian Do?)

My $100 advice!
My love/hate relationship with food began when I was a baby, I think. My mom said I used to make Christmas trees with my spinach. I don't remember that, but I do remember holding dinner parties in high school. My sister and I made baked Alaska and Louisiana Pork chops Creole. We also had a Hawaiian dinner party with friends. Chicken Waikiki Beach, Volcano Mashed potatoes, Hawaiian Brownies a la mode, and a Southern Comfort punch that we weren't even old enough to drink. Mama didn't know about that! I didn't know too many High School kids who had dinner parties. I experimented with omelets and a chocolate jelly roll that my mother warned me was very difficult to pull off. I somehow managed it.
The difference between then and now is that I could make all that food and not eat a bite! Now I eat the whole thing! My mother and I would have contests to see who could go the longest without eating. We'd go five days! I get way too bitchy if I go without one meal now.
I actually convinced myself I was going to get lipo. I did some research, and even went for a consultation. I'll share that info, so you won't have to spend the $100 bucks. There are two procedures that are really popular right now. One is called Smart Lipo. The doc I consulted with is new at the procedure. It costs between $3500 and $3900 "per zone." A zone is lower stomach, upper stomach, back, inner thighs, outer thighs. They will only remove fat from one zone at a time. That means four or five procedures, if you want all those areas done. That's between $10,000 and $14,000. If all of that wasn't enough to motivate my diet, he told me I'd want to bring a shower curtain with me because I'd be leaking fat and other fluids after the procedure. I can deal with grease from my Fillet O Fish on the seat before it becomes body fat, but after is a little different story!
The other procedure is called Vaser Liposolution. Similar procedure with a smaller needle than regular lipo. Both have less down time, but this one requires a hospital stay, at least with this doctor. The woman I spoke with said you'd want to stay in the hospital. I said, "not really!" Without naming names, she bashed the other doctor in town saying how scary it would be to go to someone who was new a the procedure. . . "oops, there's a jugular!" she said. "We'll have to do better next time."
I should thank her. Saved me a lot of money. They are all a bit nuts. I think I'll have a nose job instead. At least it won't grow back!
Here's my tip for looking good at the gym. Place your equipment beside the largest person in the class. You're sure to look small. Don't worry, there's always someone bigger than you! Of course, all the skinny chicks surrounding me probably have the same theory!
I think I'm going through withdrawal. No wine for the past three days, but I've had a headache for three days. What's up with that? It doesn't pay to detox.
Well, in spite of the headache, I've been eating lots of veggies and fruit, and drinking water with a squirt of fresh lemon. Makes it way easier to tolerate.
Fresh herbs from the garden help with the veggies too. For dinner, I cooked up some fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, and garlic with fresh sage and rosemary from the garden. That's totally guilt free. Whether you're making high or low fat food, you should grow some fresh herbs. It makes everything taste better. Bon Appetite!

That Catholic guilt!
I'm proud to say I had nothing to feel guilty about today. . . at least in the food/exercise department. I stuck to my diet, except for one lifesaver and I went to the gym for an hour of bodypump (a weight lifting class.) Feeling good! Why does it seem to take so much longer to get the weight off? It's been two days already!
Yes, I have survived day two of my diet challenge. Got my hair colored and styled and had a manicure. Funny, I don't look any thinner!
Do you think Julia Child ever exercised? I find it hard to imagine. I mean, when you spend eight hours making a stew how can you possible have time. "Melt the butter in the pan, chop one onion, place it in the pan and stir it with a wooden spoon, then drop it and give me 20. Oops I've cut the dickens out of my finger!" Yeah, not really working.
Do you think Jillian Michaels ever spent eight hours making a stew? Maybe eight hours in the gym. There must be some way to have the best of both worlds. I'm determined to find it!

Jillian and Julia Day One
I've basically been eating pretty much everything, so I decided to challenge my sisters and some friends in a contest. Ten weeks to loose ten percent of our body weight. Easy peasy, right? Not really if you love to cook as much as I do. I read Food and Wine magazine like porn and Crate and Barrel and Williams Sonoma catalogues are like fashion magazines to me. I do really want to be super hot by the time I turn 45, which is a mere 17 months away.
So, Labor Day weekend was my chance to eat everything I wanted and get it out of my system. I made lobster topped filet mignon with holandaise, I ate seafood fritters and whole-belly fried clams. I even ate a Filet O Fish and fries, washed down with a nice bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by almost the whole container of Ben and Jerry's peanutbutter cup icecream. The evidence has been eaten, the rest destroyed.
Here's where Jillian comes in. She can kick but on the biggest looser, so I bought her video set about a year ago. It really works! I've put it in at about 11 p.m. after eating half a pound of chocolate ganache and orange butter cream icing. Gotta alleviate the guilt somehow!
So the wine is off-limits for now and all the really good (really bad) food. I can do this! I'll just have to create some really yummy versions of the Julia classics--minus all the butter. Wish me luck!
